Estimated Cost for Two Travelers — 7 Days / 6 Nights

Value-Conscious
$4,000–$6,500
Comfortable / Upscale
$6,500–$10,000
Luxury Tokyo Stay
$10,000–$18,000
Ultra-Luxury
$18,000–$30,000+

What Goes Into the Price?

Airfare

For planning purposes, two round-trip economy tickets from the United States to Tokyo may commonly represent roughly $1,400–$3,200+ for two travelers. Premium economy, business class, peak cherry-blossom season and major holiday periods can cost substantially more.

Hotels

Use these broad nightly planning ranges:

  • Value / simpler hotels: $120–$250 per night
  • Comfortable / upscale: $250–$500 per night
  • Luxury: $500–$1,000+ per night
  • Ultra-luxury: $1,000–$2,500+ per night

Rates can change significantly by neighborhood, season, room size, exchange rates and availability.

Food

Tokyo can work surprisingly well for many budgets. A couple might plan approximately $80–$220 per day, depending on whether they rely more on ramen shops, casual restaurants, convenience stores and neighborhood dining or add high-end sushi, tasting menus and hotel restaurants.

Tokyo is unusual in that excellent food is available at both modest and very high price points, so dining costs are one of the easiest parts of the trip to control.

Transportation

Tokyo’s rail and subway systems allow most visitors to explore the city without renting a car. Current Tokyo Subway Ticket prices for eligible visitors are:

  • 24-hour ticket: ¥1,000 per adult
  • 48-hour ticket: ¥1,500 per adult
  • 72-hour ticket: ¥2,000 per adult

These passes cover Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway lines. Airport transfers, JR trains and some private railways are separate.

For two travelers, allow approximately $150–$350 for local transportation and airport transfers during a one-week trip, depending on routes and how often taxis are used.

Sightseeing & Experiences

Allow approximately $250–$900+ for two travelers for a week of sightseeing. Costs depend heavily on the mix of free neighborhoods, temples and parks versus observation decks, museums, teamLab, guided tours and special experiences.

Many of Tokyo’s most memorable experiences — including Shibuya, Harajuku, Ginza, neighborhood exploring and portions of Asakusa — can be enjoyed without a major admission charge.

Tokyo Accommodation Tax

Tokyo currently charges an accommodation tax based on the room rate per person, per night:

  • Under ¥10,000: no tax
  • ¥10,000 to under ¥15,000: ¥100
  • ¥15,000 or more: ¥200

This tax may be collected separately by the hotel.

Ways to Save in Tokyo

  • Travel outside peak cherry-blossom season and major holidays — hotel prices can increase substantially during high-demand travel periods.
  • Stay near a train or subway station — a convenient location can reduce taxi costs and wasted travel time.
  • Use Tokyo’s subway and rail systems — most visitors do not need a rental car.
  • Mix expensive meals with inexpensive neighborhood restaurants — Tokyo has excellent ramen, soba, curry, sushi and casual restaurants at many price levels.
  • Use convenience stores strategically — they can be useful for breakfast, drinks, snacks and simple meals.
  • Group attractions by neighborhood — visit Shibuya and Harajuku together, and combine Asakusa with Tokyo Skytree rather than repeatedly crossing the city.
  • Compare neighborhoods — Shinjuku, Shibuya and Ginza can command higher hotel prices, while other well-connected neighborhoods may offer better value.
