Quick Answer: When Should You Go to the Maldives?
For the greatest chance of sunnier, drier beach weather, December through April is the classic choice. The tradeoff is higher demand and often higher prices, especially around Christmas, New Year and other peak travel periods.
May through November is wetter and more humid, but it can bring lower rates and fewer crowds. It is also an important period for marine-life experiences in some atolls, including manta-ray activity around Baa Atoll.
Official Visit Maldives information notes that manta timing varies substantially by atoll. Baa Atoll’s Hanifaru Bay is especially known for manta activity during the southwest monsoon, while other atolls have different seasonal patterns.

Marine Life: Timing Depends on the Atoll
There is no single Maldives-wide “manta season.” Marine-life timing shifts with the monsoons and varies from atoll to atoll — and even from site to site within the same atoll.
- Baa Atoll / Hanifaru Bay: major manta activity generally occurs during the southwest monsoon, especially around May through October. Official Visit Maldives sources identify Hanifaru Bay as one of the Maldives’ best-known manta aggregation areas.
- North Malé Atoll: manta timing varies by site, with some areas active May–November and others during the December–April northeast-monsoon period.
- South Ari Atoll: whale sharks can be encountered throughout the year, while manta locations shift seasonally.
